Centuries old ruins of forts, palaces, ramparts and monuments that dot the countryside and the Aravalli hills around Rajasthan often appear lifeless, shrouded in the memories of a time gone by. And yet, as the artist observes, flowers, trees and birds that make the ruins their home seem to enliven them and provide a context of the present in the past. In this series of paintings in Oil and Oil Pastels, imagery of native flora and fauna has been layered over that of mysterious ruins, with black colour symbolising the past. Rekha’s love for architecture, nature, folk symbols and textures of Rajasthan also mark their presence in these works.
